Gloria Cain Obituary

Gloria Cain

March 9, 1931 – September 6, 2019

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our mom, Gloria Cain (Shulz), on September 6, 2019 in Qualicum Beach with her loving 5 daughters by her side, who she once said were her raison d’etre.

Gloria was predeceased by the love of her life “Cussy” (Cuthbert) Cain in 1981. She is survived by her daughters: Sharon Nixon (Dyrl); Susan Smith; Shelley Stanhope (Rob); Nancy Taylor (Michael) and Laura Munroe (Warren); 12 grandchildren, (4 step-grandchildren), and 5 great grand-children.

Gloria was born in Vancouver to Jack Shulz and Vivian Mackay and lived in Edmonton and Calgary along with her (surviving) brother Gary, whom she adored. At 18, Gloria moved to Port Alberni where she met Cussy at a dance at the Athletic Hall. Cussy remained her loving husband until his untimely death at the age of 51. Gloria is perhaps best known as “Mrs. Cain” the proprietor of Cain’s Store, next to ADSS, which she and Cussy ran for many years. She was always happy and hard working; running a busy store while raising her young family filled her with purpose and love.

She will also be remembered for her years at Jowsey’s teaching curious women how to use something called a ‘microwave’ oven. Her tranquil years were spent living at the home she loved most on Sproat Lake, enjoying its beauty throughout the changing seasons in company with her family and good friends who shared a love for this special place with her. Most importantly, everyone who knew Gloria will remember her as a selfless, kind, and compassionate woman. She was joyful and always positive. She cared deeply for the underprivileged, particularly if they were children. And she loved plants and animals, especially birds and dogs. She also loved music and could play piano by ear. In short, she was a hard act to follow. Look up to the sky and remember how small we are and that the greatest gift we can give is to love, as she did. Gloria has left us, but she resides in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, we respectfully ask that you consider donating to operationsmile.org – a charity for children in need which Gloria was passionate about.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the exceptional compassionate care provided by the staff at Qualicum Manor where Gloria lived in her final years.

A service for Gloria will be held on Friday, September 20th at 11 am at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, 887 Wembley Road in Parksville.
