Barbara Maria Kenno (Sutherland)

Barb passed away peacefully at home in Parksville, BC. She left behind George her husband of 52 years, and their three children: daughter Kara, with children Victoria and Ronan, living in Calgary, son Adam, living in Victoria and son Paul and his wife Marci, with their children Layla and Kai, living in Esquimalt.
Barb was predeceased by her parents, Keith and Laura Sutherland. She is survived by her sister Penny and family in Alberta, and her 3 brothers John (Wendy), Gordon (Lee), and Brian (Vivian), all in Ontario, along with their families, also Kenji Kenno (Claire) and family also in Ontario.
Barb was born in Fort Frances, Ontario, she graduated from McKellar Hospital School of Nursing in Thunder Bay in 1971 where she began her RN nursing career on general and neurosurgical floors.
Moving to Nanaimo, BC in 1989, Barb was a RN at Trillium Lodge Senior Care Home. While working, she pursued further education and proudly earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Malaspina University in 2001.
In 2000 moved to Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, where Barb worked at the local hospital and also taught the Home Care Aid program at Cumberland College. After four years, returned to Vancouver Island and settled in beautiful Parksville. Barb worked locally as a Home Care Nurse, a role she absolutely loved and felt called to do, caring deeply for both her clients and her family. Barb was also one of the founders of the Oceanside Foot Care Association.
Barb was always active and adventurous. She loved the water, kayaking, paddle boarding, water sking, swimming in Rainy Lake, Trout Lake, The Pacific Ocean, Kitsilano Pool and especially at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach. A proud member of the Ravensong Masters Swim Club, she took great joy in competing in the BC Senior Games and the annual Qualicum Beach Mile Swim. She swam lanes 3X weekly with special friends and the post swim coffee outings were the highlight of her week.
Barb also ran numerous half-marathons in Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, and Tisdale. She excelled at road biking a 'War Horse' that participated in the Qualicum Beach Mini-Triathlons and Comoxs Snow to Surf Relay Races. Barb's favourite run or walk was at home in San Pariel her Parksville neighbourhood seeing people with dogs along the Strait of Georgia through Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park.
Music was another great joy in her life she sang as a member of Sweet Adelines and played with the Qualicum Beach Ukulele Association. Barb loved cooking known for her famous chocolate chip cookies, carrot cake, spaghetti and meatballs.
Barb was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her four cherished grandchildren. She touched countless lives with her compassion, warmth, and boundless energy.
Our family will be holding a small private celebration of life. In honour of Barb, please remember her by taking a sunny walk, enjoying time with loved ones, or toasting her memory at a family dinner. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be sincerely appreciated.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many caring individuals who supported Barb during her Alzheimer's challenge: Dr. Pienaar, Dr. King, Parksville Home Care Nurses, Parksville Pharmasave, Nanaimo General Hospital, Sue's Senior Care, Parksville RCMP, Fire Department & Ambulance Services, Trillium Lodge, Ripple Rehabilitation and the Oceanside Hospice Society.
Barb will always be remembered as the best friend, wife, mother, and grandmother our guiding light and greatest treasure.
