In Loving Memory Of
Bennie Bakken
March 22, 1932 – March 1, 2026
Bennie Bakken passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at the age of 93. He was the youngest of eight children and was raised on a farm near Roblin Manitoba, where he learned the values of hard work, resilience, and family that guided him throughout his life.
At 22 years old, Bennie left the farm and moved to Port Alberni to begin a new chapter. There he married and became the proud father of three daughters. Although he later divorced, he remained devoted to his family. Caring, supporting and providing for his daughters was always his greatest priority. More than anything, he cherished time with his family and friends.
Bennie worked diligently for 38 years at the Somass Mill in production and welding. He had a love for music and played the guitar, often enjoying musical events in the community. He was especially fond of classic country music and also had a strong interest in automobiles and enjoyed traveling when he could. Bennie was known for his easygoing nature and his appreciation for the simple joys in life.
Bennie was predeceased by his parents, Bertha Bakken (née Tangan) and Edward Bakken; his brothers George, Magnus, Anton (Esther), and Edward; his sisters Emilia Hern, Gaye (George Deederly) and brother in law Wellings Charbonneau.
He is survived by his sister Margaret Charbonneau; his daughters Laurie Abernethy (Terry), Cindy Bakken, and Christina Stewart (Tom); his grandchildren Jason, Kristopher, Breann, Megan, Lance, Shane, and Johnny; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Bennie will be remembered for his quiet strength, warm heart, and the steady presence he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all whose lives he touched. His love for his daughters and family will remain his lasting legacy, carried forward through the generations.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Echo Village Care Home for the wonderful care and kindness shown to Bennie.
