Craig Beattie passed away in Qualicum Beach, BC on August 2, 2017 at the age of 70. He was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, on December 6, 1946. He and his family moved to Brandon, Manitoba and then to Winnipeg where he completed high school. He went on to obtain his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1971. He had wanted to move to the West Coast ever since he had visited Vancouver as a teenager. He came to Vancouver in 1972 to specialize in ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia. After his residency, he did two fellowships, one in Vancouver and another in Louisville, Kentucky. He was in turn Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia. His special interest was colour vision. More than once, he was named the UBC Department of Ophthalmology "Teacher of the Year". He had a busy ophthalmology practice as well as continuing to direct diagnostic services at the VGH/ UBC Eye Care Centre. Craig was known to friends as Dr. Cee Better. He enjoyed hiking with friends on the local Vancouver trails and mountains and usually had his camera with him to capture images of the landscape and birds that he loved. Classical music and opera were also a passion. He devoted much time and energy to volunteer work. His associations include the West Southlands Ratepayers Association, Southlands Riding Club and the Vancouver Maritime Museum on whose board he served as president for several years. He and his wife, Amyra, spent the past year living in Qualicum Beach, enjoying the Vancouver Island lifestyle. Craig continued to work part time for the Mental Health Review Board and the Vancouver Island Patient Care Quality Review Board. He will be greatly missed by his wife, friends, colleagues, and patients In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
