Obituary

Donald McKamey 1947-2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald McKamey at Oceanside Trillium Hospice on August 10th, 2025, at the age of 78.

Born January 4th, 1947, in Port Alberni, Don was the beloved son of Phyllis McKamey (passed January 29th, 2015) and Jack McKamey (passed December 27, 1996). Also predeceased by his brother-in-laws, Bruce Jordan, and Dave Dick, and sister in law Sandra Bedford.

Don is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 43 years, Jane. He will be forever remembered by his children: Colin McKamey, Kevin Mowat (Kelly), Carla Young (Roger), and Jenny Mowat (Paul). He is also remembered by his sister, Connie, whom he was very close to, his sister Jackie, and his brothers Wayne and Lee.

He was a proud grandfather to Kendra, Joelle, and Mackenzie Young, Ethan and Camryn Stannard, as well as Ryland, Lauryn, and Carter Mowat. Don is also lovingly remembered by his extended family, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

Don began his career as a Pipe Fitter and 4th Class Stationary Engineer at the Port Alberni pulp mill, where he worked diligently for several decades. In 1968, at the age of 21, he married Janice, with whom he had his son, Colin (1977).

In 1982, Don found lasting love and partnership with Jane, becoming a devoted father to Colin and her three children. In 1983, the family moved to Qualicum Beach, though Don continued to commute daily to Port Alberni for 23 years until his retirement.

Don found joy in the simple things: games with his family and fishing out of French Creek Marina with the kids. He also enjoyed golfing with his good friends Dan, Gord, Peter, and Mike after moving to a home on the Eaglecrest Golf Course. He became a member of the Eaglecrest Golf Club and cherished the camaraderie and game alike.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Biglow and his wonderful receptionist, Ingrid, whose impact went far beyond that, as well as all the staff at Oceanside Trillium Hospice, who were truly angels during Don's final seven weeks of care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don's memory to Oceanside Trillium Hospice.

As per Don's wishes, there will be no formal service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date with close family and friends.

Don will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
