Obituary

Donald Sara Obituary It is with heavy hearts that Dons family announce his passing on December 6, 2021 in Nanaimo, BC at the age of 94 years. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara (Cotsworth) in 2010, brother Charlie and sister Phyllis. Lovingly remembered by his children, Richard (Nadine) of Parksville, BC, Maureen (Dave) of Calgary, AB, grandchildren Bob (Amber), Mike, Ryan, and Stephanie (Josh), and great-grandchildren, Peyton, Ayden, Landen, Raiden, and Willow, and his former daughter-in-law, Astrid. Beloved uncle of Barbie and Jack Murphy of BC, Nancy Brager (Paul) of Alberta, and many other nieces and nephews across Canada and the US. Don is also survived by his brother, Richard (Dick) of California. Don was born in Winnipeg MB and lived there until he headed west in his late teens. He worked at various jobs in Alberta including pipelining, taxi driver, beer slinger, bus driver with Brewsters in Banff, and worked on opening the Rogers Pass section of the Trans-Canada Highway. It was in Banff he met Barbara through his boss on the highways project, Peter Cotsworth, and they married in 1957 and eventually settled in Revelstoke B.C. In 1964 he moved his young family to Victoria B.C. to begin a new career with the Federal Government, Dept. of Public Works, where he worked with the highway dept and eventually the dept. of wharves and breakwaters. He took early retirement in 1986 at the age of 58. He and Barbara then moved from West Vancouver to Coquitlam B.C. to be closer to his 4 grandchildren. After his retirement he enjoyed the many bus trips to Reno and Lake Chelan he took with Barbara. They took several cruises to Alaska and Hawaii, and he thoroughly enjoyed the 3 week trip to Great Britain they took in 1988, but Don was always happiest in the mountains, and spent many vacations camping and hiking in the Banff and Yoho National Parks. He passed on his love of the area to his children, who will always cherish the memories he shared with them. The family would like to thank the local ambulance service and the staff of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for the care and comfort they provided for Don in his final days. There will be no service at Dons request. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to Qualicum Beach Memorial Services, P. O. Box 367, 118 Fern Rd. E., Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 1S7 Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
