Donald Smukowich Obituary In Loving Memory Of
Donald (Don) John Smukowich
December 15th, 1945 - July 7th, 2024
Don is survived by Janet, his wife of 47 years, his children Jill (Marc), Julie, Jeff (Monica), and grandsons Carter, Hudson, Andrew and Matthew.
Born in Avonlea, Saskatchewan, Don could be found on the stage engaged in drama productions, playing football, hockey, curling, and baseball, or refereeing hockey and umpiring baseball.
After high school, he went on to attend Ryerson University in Toronto and then found himself working at a local financial institution in Regina, before transferring to Winnipeg, where he met Janet. Together they sold real estate before moving their family to B.C. to expand a national franchise.
Don always took time to support several charitable causes which included supervising the construction of the Boys and Girls clubhouse in South Delta and raising funds to renovate the Delta Arts Council Centre. Above all, Don was known for his niche in fundraising through golf tournaments.
His passion, organizational strengths, and ability to get individuals to donate towards numerous worthy causes is what resulted in him receiving the Rotarys prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award. In 2002, he was appointed to the BC Legislature as Executive Assistant to Provincial Ministers in numerous portfolios including the Ministry of Labor, Solicitor General, Attorney General, Education, Agriculture, and Tourism, Culture and Arts until he retired in 2017.
Throughout the years of hard work, he took time to travel, golf, and cheer on the number one team in the CFL, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
A Celebration of Dons Life will be held with family and friends on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Lung Foundation or Oceanside Hospice Society would be appreciated.
