Ducan Bell-Irving Obituary Duncan Harry Bell-Irving, Q.C.
March 26, 1927- March 13, 2025
"Harry", sharp to the end, died in his sleep just before his 98 th birthday. He was predeceased by
his wife of 65 years, Theo in 2018, and is survived by his children Sara (Ivo), Jan (Chris), Malcolm
(Wendy) and Tori (Tony), 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Born in Vancouver, he grew up in Powell River and West Vancouver, attended Vernon
Preparatory School and graduated from UBC Law in 1949. He practiced corporate, tax and
estate planning law for 58 years, initially at Douglas, Symes and Brissenden and later, Legacy
Lawyers in Vancouver. He was appointed QC in 1986.
Harry spent a portion of every summer in Qualicum Beach where, in 1958, he advised his
mother to purchase a beach-side home for use by the extended family. QB summers were
filled with friends, fishing and water-skiing. As his family grew, he and Theo built a home in
Nanoose and they eventually retired to QB in 2017.
Harry was an active and accomplished sportsman. He was instrumental in forming the
Vancouver Raquets Club and brought the international Jesters squash association to Canada.
He won the BC Mens squash championship twice and represented Canada at international
competitions. He enjoyed golf and was a life-time member of the Vancouver Club and Capilano
Golf Club. Although plagued by sea-sickness, he was a keen sailor. He enjoyed the comradery
of crewing on the Gabrielle III, often as cook or drinks master. He sail-cruised in BC coastal
waters, the Caribbean and Baltic. He raced in the Swiftsure, Victoria-Maui and Sydney-Hobart
races.
Harry was an award-winning jelly-maker (Coombs Fall Fair) and was passionate and
knowledgeable about opera. He served for many years on the board of the Vancouver Opera
(including as chair) and named his pet canary, Caruso.
Harry was a consummate host and dignified gentleman. He was an interested and interesting
raconteur and was sought after to make celebratory toasts. He was a proud Canadian with a
deep interest and knowledge of history and politics - which he enjoyed discussing.
The family extend particular thanks to Dr. Hadfield of Qualicum Beach and care-givers Brittany
and David who provided much companionship and comfort over the last few years.
In honour of Harry please consider a donation to the United Way
