Obituary

Edgar 'Ed' Borchert Obituary Major (Ret'd) Ed Borchert led a decorated military career spanning 32 years with the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry Regiment, (|&|| Battalion). Despite describing his education as 'grade 1 page 10,' this farm boy climbed the ranks and took his commission as Captain in 1983. He attended OPDP, updating his education record to 'grade 1 page 10, with notes.' Ed was renowned for his dedication to young soldiers, emphasizing effective training and fitness. Stories abounded of Ed running back to support the last person during training, leaving an indelible mark on all who served alongside him. Before he retired from the Military, Ed worked tirelessly to establish the Museum of the Regiments, in Calgary Alberta. Here he and his wife Susan then spent the next few years running the 'Flight Line Deli and Gift Shop', where his love and commitment to Veterans Affairs were firmly established In the immediate years after his retirement, while residing in Calgary Alberta, Ed commenced his work with Mtis peoples through the Native Women's Shelter/Friendship Center where he served as Chairperson. Through his efforts, Ed was honored as a Mtis Elder and served as the President of the National Mtis Veterans Association. In October 2005, Ed was a primary force that successfully led to the Aboriginal Spiritual Journey and 'Calling Home the Aboriginal Veterans' from the European battlefields of Ypres Salient, (Belgium), Juno Beach (Normandy), and Vimy Ridge (France). Throughout his years of advocacy, his vision and unwavering determination led to the significant recognition of the contribution of Canada's First Peoples during times of war. For his contributions to the Aboriginal Veterans of Canada, Ed received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation in 2006. Ed was 'called home' in the evening, Tuesday 23rd of April, after just a few days in Comox Valley Hospital. His strength, humility, and commitment to his family and those he served remained unwavering throughout his life. Ed is survived by his wife Susan, son Glenn, daughter Candace, grandson Riley, sister Ronda, and her husband and brother to Ed, Dale, who was by his side in his final days. Ed is also survived by his sisters Bonnie and Connie, brother Roger, granddaughter Ashley, and all their families who were deeply cherished by Ed.
