It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Gavin John MacLeod on March 12th 2025, at the age of 78. Gavin passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving wife, Anne, their children, Andrew, Heather, and Jamie, and his sister, Christina.
Gavin was predeceased by his parents Gladys and Ronald MacLeod. He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Anne, their children Andrew, Heather, and Jamie, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Jack, Gavin, Mara, Kadie, Finn, and Forrest MacLeod, and step-granddaughter Hayden Bendal. He is also survived by his sister, Christina, and his beloved nieces and nephews.
Born on January 24th 1947, in North Vancouver, Gavin spent his early years growing up with his sister, cousins and lifelong friends, often spending summer weekends at the family cabin on Cultus Lake. He went on to attend Simon Fraser University, where he earned his teaching degree. Gavin began his teaching career in 1972 in Comox before relocating to Port Alberni, where he spent the remainder of his 33-year career in School District 70. He retired in 2005 as the Principal of Gill Elementary School. In 1982, Gavin and Anne moved to Qualicum Beach to raise their children, with Gavin commuting to Port Alberni for work.
In 1996, Gavin earned his Master's Degree from San Diego State University, which led him to becoming a Vice Principal and later Principal. He was deeply passionate about education, and his influence touched the lives of countless students. Gavin was known for his commitment to hands-on learning, outdoor camps, cross-country events, and most of all, his dedication to building meaningful relationships with his students and colleagues. His love for teaching inspired not only his own children but many others to follow in his footsteps.
In retirement, Gavin enjoyed staying busy with his family and friends. He spent his time volunteering with community meals through St. Stephens Church, building a family float cabin, going on West Coast fishing trips, coffee mornings with his friends, biking, and helping take care of his grandchildren. He also treasured trips with Anne, endless woodworking projects, and his passion for trains, planes, World War II history and Scottish pipe bands. He had a deep affection for England and Scotland, where his family heritage originated. Gavin was a devoted Christian and steadfast member of St. Stephens Church, Gavins faith was a central part of his life.
Gavin will be remembered for his incredible sense of humor, his genuine interest in the lives of others, and his deep devotion to his family and friends. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren and loved his wife Anne with all his heart. His unwavering willingness to help others, his proud patriotism, and his vast knowledge of all things made him a beloved figure in his community. Gavins guidance, love, and devotion will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 24th 2025 at 2:00pm at St. Stephens United Church. Feel free to wear a piece of tartan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Lung Foundation for Pulmonary Fibrosis research.
