We are greatly saddened by the passing of George Kinnear Grande at Nanaimo General Hospital, BC on Easter Monday April 17, 2017 aged 97 years.
George was born 21st August 1919 at home in Montreal, QB. Son of Albert Edward Grande and Marion Harriet Grande (nee Kinnear). Graduate of McGill University BA 1940. One year of graduate law at Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, 1941.
George had a long and eventful career.He served Canada as a RCAF Radar officer in WW11. He worked as an assistant to Lester B Pearson. He was Secretary of the first permanent Canadian delegation to the United Nations under General AGL McNaughton and also served as a Canadian Diplomat in Greece, Germany, Norway and Iceland, Austria, South Africa.
Later he enjoyed his writing career as a journalist for The Province (BC), Ottawa Citizen and co-edited Bout de Papier. George edited the book 'Canadians on Radar' Royal Canadian Air Force, 1940 - 1945. Later he and his fellow veterans created a permanent Radar Display at the Imperial War Museum, Ottawa.
George was also involved in many charitable and social endeavours well into his nineties including the United Way, Rotary Club, Salvation Army-Grace Manor, and PAFSO Award Committee. He was a faithful and loved Parishioner of Parkdale United Church, Ottawa.
Predeceased by his wife, Diane B. Grande; son, Robert M Grande; sister, Beryl E McConnell (nee Grande); and nieces, Alison Bowick and Jill Embree Williams.
Greatly missed by his daughter, Susan and son-in-law, Ray Bruce; sons, John and Donald Grande; stepson, Daniel Milican; and granddaughter, Caroline Hoste and husband, Eric Wallace. Grand daughters Clara and Samuelle Crepault Grande; also Great-granddaughters, Sophiah and Charlotte Wallace.
Survived also by Margaret S Grande (nee Pagan), mother of Robert, Susan, John and Donald Grande.
He enjoyed the intimate community of Qualicum Beach, BC, where he contributed and volunteered in his last years.
He will be greatly missed for his humour, compassion, generosity, sense of adventure, and his love of life will long be remembered. Much appreciation to the doctors and staff of Nanaimo General Hospital.
