Obituary

George Head passed away at home on May 6th at the age of 91.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years Henrietta, his son Doug and daughter-in-law Lisa, grandchildren Rachel and Evan, daughter Kelly, former spouse John, and stepsons Bowen (daughter-in-law Kaitlynn), and Fox (fiancée Katrina).

George was born in Vancouver on June 8th 1934, the only child of Marjorie and Charles (Chuck) Head.

His long career on the railroad began when, at the age of 19, he got a job as a brakeman at CN Rail on steam engines running out of Blue River BC. This was a special time that Dad spoke of and remembered fondly.

George then started working for CP Rail in 1956, progressing through unionized positions such as switchman, conductor, and yardmaster to management positions until his retirement in 1990.

In 1962, George and Henri bought a house in a newly developed suburb of Coquitlam (Oakdale) and raised their family there. After putting in an in-ground pool in the backyard in the 1970s, many pool parties were held.

George always loved being on the ocean and boating was a big part of his recreational life, often chartering boats to explore the Gulf Islands with friends and family. There were also vacations in Mexico and Hawaii at beach side locales, as well as golfing trips to Palm Springs.

In 2002, George and Henrietta moved to Vancouver Island and built their new home in Qualicum Beach.

They became members of the Pheasant Glen Golf Club where they met new friends, many of whom grew to be cherished friends over the years, including the Tuesday breakfast club George attended each week (when he liked the restaurant).

George’s interests included model building - everything from large complex wooden ships to various Lego kits, using MS flight simulator to virtually travel to parts unknown, and playing first person shooter and mystery solving video games. Yes, he was a gamer, probably the oldest player on-line.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the following who provided care for George over the past months and days:

Nanaimo Regional Hospital

Vancouver Island Health home services

Nurse Next Door
