Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce that on May 19, 2026, Hubert ‘Bert’ Carter of Qualicum Beach, BC, passed away in the evening surrounded by family in his peaceful last moments. After a battle with his health, Bert is now with his beloved Pat.

Bert will be dearly missed and survived by his brother Dale Carter, sister Betty Endersby (Dennis Endersby), daughter Jo-Ann Carter (Al Modin) and his grandchildren Allanda Carter (Geoff Kendrick), Brendan Carter, Gabriella Proietti (Harel Flores), and Haylee Proietti, who will all lovingly remember him. He will be meeting his predeceased father Felix Carter, mother Josephine Carter, his brother Roger Carter, his wife Patricia (nee Howard) and his son Allan Carter in Heaven.

In his early teens he met his wife Pat, and married by 20, they celebrated 65 years of marriage in August 2024 together. Born and raised in Manitoba, they later moved across the country to Victoria, BC. Bert enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1957. He spent his career in the Navy overseas, on 10 ships, such as the HMCS Columbia and Kootenay. He served a total of 25 years in the Navy and ended his career as a Chief Petty Officer Second Class 1982. Throughout his career he was awarded with two medals, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee-1977, and the Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp. After Berts retirement from the Navy, Pat and he became business and lifetime partners in more ways than one. Where Bert was, Pat would not be far away, from road trips to Mexico to staycations at Carter’s Pond.

Carter’s Trucking & Enterprises was Bert’s second career, and he spent many years driving up and down Vancouver Island. He was also known for his many friendly transactions, if you helped Bert, he would help you. Whether it was welding, fabrication, chainsaw needs or anything that gave him a reason to use his loader, backhoe, and trucks, Bert would be there. He was always available to help anyone who had a hard fix and welcomed them to his shops at Grand Rose Road or Carter’s Pond.

Upon moving to Qualicum Beach, Bert picked up volunteering with the Qualicum Bay Lions Club and the Bowser Legion Branch 211 and was a member for over 40 years and 50 years, respectively.

The family would like to extend a special thanks Bert and Pat's Goddaughter, Teresa and the entire Mack family, all the care aids, staff, and general manager Heidi Barker at Cokely Manor in Parksville. We invite you to join us in celebrating Bert’s life at Carter’s Pond on Sunday, October 11 at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, any donations to the Qualicum Bay Lions Club programs in Bert's name would be greatly appreciated.
