Obituary

In Loving Memory of Joseph Sebastian Meyer

Joseph Sebastian Meyer, lovingly known as Joe, passed away peacefully at the age of 78,

October 22, 2026, on his own terms, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. His

beloved wife of 48 years, Diana, was by his side.

Joe immigrated with his parents to Canada from Holland in 1957 aboard the SS Ryndam. He first

settled in Merritt, British Columbia, before eventually making Calgary his home. In 1969, Joe

began a 33-year career with the City of Calgary, Parks and Recreation Department, where he

dedicated himself to his work until his retirement in 2002. Shortly after, Joe and Diana moved to

Vancouver Island to begin the next chapter of their lives.

Above all, Joe loved his family and the comfort of home; these were things that mattered most.

As a parent, Joe supported community hockey, and making cherished memories, camping with

their children, grandchildren and friends, in Banff, the Kootenays and Shuswap, for more than

twenty years. You could often find Joe with a beer in one hand and a pool cue in the other,

enjoying good company, playing golf and of course, travelling with Diana to Hawaii, Europe and

many trips to Mexico. Joe also took great pride in his home and yard, spending time tending to

his trees, shaping his bushes and gardens; reflecting the care and love he put into the life they

built.

Joe lived life on his own terms, and he faced his final chapter with the same determination and

courage that carried him through his long 8-year battle with cancer. His life was built around the

love of family and home, hard work and the happiness of simple pleasures.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Evert and Margaret Meyer.

Joe leaves behind his loving wife, Diana, his children, Roger and Barbi-Jo, stepchildren, Kerrie

Reay, Keith (Tracey) Deines, and Steven Deines, his grandchildren, Nicole, James, Ashley, and

Kara, and his great-grandchildren, Emma, Elly, Celia.

A special thankyou to Joe’s medical team, Dr. Julia Somerville-Hickey, Dr. Parimi, Dr. Martens

and Trillium Hospice Centre (with special thanks to Crystal) who helped make Joe’s last days,

comfortable and cared for with kindness and dignity.

Rest peacefully, Joe. You will always be loved, deeply missed and forever remembered.
