It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Karen Marjorie Giles on February 8,
2025, at the age of 79, at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 4, 1945, in Mannville, Alberta, Karen grew to be a spirited woman with a
contagious smile, sparkling eyes, a loving heart, and a positive outlook on life. She found
immense pleasure in bringing happiness to others. She went out of her way to show kindness
and compassion, provide support, and create moments of joy for friends, family, coworkers,
neighbors, strangers, and animals alike. She delighted in traveling, enjoying good food, baking
delicious treats to share, dancing and listening to music (especially Elvis Presley), quality time
with loved ones, and a glass of Pinot Grigio (always with a side of ice). Karens warmth,
positivity, and boundless energy left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
Karen lived her life with an open heart, and her love and kindness were felt by all who knew her.
One of her favourite quotes, by Maya Angelou, captured her spirit perfectly: "People will forget
what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them
feel." These words reflected her essence - a beautiful person who left a lasting impression on
everyone, not by what she said or did, but by the warmth, compassion, and joy she shared. Her
love made us all feel seen, cherished, and valued.
Karen is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Elden Edward Giles, who was not only
her husband but also her best friend, sharing a bond strengthened by laughter, shared
adventures, and an unshakeable commitment to one another. She is also survived by their two
beloved daughters, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, as well as her older sister,
Marion. She leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and countless cherished memories.
While her presence will be deeply missed, Karens spirit will continue to dance in the hearts of
those who knew and loved her. A celebration of her life will be held at Rotary Park in Qualicum
Beach on August 4, 2025, which would have been her 80th birthday. In lieu of flowers, the family
