Obituary

Malcolm Cavanagh Obituary Malcolm Ian Cavanagh (Ian), born October 2, 1936 from Birkenhead, UK, joined his wife of 61 years, Patricia Jean Perry on April 15, 2025, just 4 months after her passing. Ian is survived by his loving children Nigel, Louise (Mike Vamvounis), Sarah, & Jennifer (Bruce Arthur), grandchildren Alex, Sarah, Jane, Simon, Malcolm, Lena, Elliott, & Evie, brother-in-law David Perry (Christine), niece Nicola Jefferies (Stephen), & nephew Adam Perry (Barbara). Ian is predeceased by his parents, William Cavanagh and Florence Wilson, and son-in-law Tom Patterson (Nigel). Ian was a true gentleman, teaching kindness and compassion through example. He was a gentle father and devoted husband, fully committed to prioritizing the needs and comforts of his loved ones above all else. He instilled the value of education in his children and ensured they pushed themselves academically through post secondary education. It is no coincidence his four children chose professions centered on compassion for people or the environment. Patricia may have instilled the importance of fighting the good fight in her children, but Ian showed them the importance of charity and service. He was generous almost to a fault. Ian had a passion for history, geography and cryptic crosswords, was an enthusiastic bridge, squash and rugby player, and had a wit second to none. He took pleasure in making people laugh, which he did at every opportunity. Ian enjoyed the simple pleasures of social gatherings, of scenic car rides and crme brle, of holding babies, and of tenderly caring for the pets he was surely allergic to. Ian was a cypher officer in the Royal Air Force and loved military planes. While stationed in Germany, he worked with the enigma machine, and met his future wife, Patricia. Together they moved to Hampshire, UK and then to Ottawa, Canada, where they raised their family. Ian worked as a statistician for the Government of Canada in both Stats Can and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. Ian also worked for the OECD in Paris. Ian and Patricia retired to British Columbia where they eventually settled in the Qualicum Beach area, enjoying their time with family and friends. In his final year, Ian was a constant bedside companion to his wife until her passing, ensuring her every need was met. Ian was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by his children and grandchildren. He was a gentleman to the end. His strong moral compass led his children to meaningful lives. He was everything his family needed and more. His legacy is one of kindness and generosity, and we are left with a sense of deep gratitude and a heart full of beautiful memories.
