Obituary

Maxine Macgillivray Obituary Maxine Dorothy Macgillivray (1950-2023) Maxine Dorothy MacGillivray passed away April 29, 2023 at her home in Qualicum Beach, BC, with her husband Norman Bendle and pup Nellie by her side. She is survived by her son Jesse Nutter of Victoria, and sister Joanna of Waterloo, On. In her brief 73 years Maxine left her mark on the world. A committed adult educator, she was a pioneer and innovator in ESL and Distance Education, working at a number of institutions including McGill University, TLUQ (tl-universit) , UVIC, and Vancouver Island University. As an instructor and administrator, she fought successfully for equal pay, benefits ,unionization, and a four day work week, especially for those teaching in adult ESL programs. Sometimes her work took her around the globe, which she loved. Brilliant, passionate, inquisitive and creative, Maxine faced life with fire and intensityno conversation with her was ever mundane or boring. She cared deeply about this world and the human condition, yet she knew how to have fun and her unique, unrestrained laughter could cut through any gathering. Maxine was a devoted mother and loyal, generous friend whose passion for art and gardening added great beauty to the lives of those around her. She will be remembered with deep love and gratitude. As per her wishes, there will be no formal celebration of life, but there will be an informal gathering of family and friends If you wish a donation to your favourite charity in her memory will be appreciated.
