Obituary

In loving memory of Michael William Reid, who passed away with a rare and aggressive cancer at home cared for and supported by his family on the morning of May 17, 2026, just two weeks shy of his 76th birthday.

Michael was born in Penticton, British Columbia, and throughout his life lived in many communities across the province before settling in Qualicum Beach, where he made his home for the past 40 years. He was the son of Don Reid, born in Toronto and passed at the age of 65, and Ella Reid (née Holland) – one of eleven children, who was raised in Mabel Lake, BC, and lived to the age of 93. Michael was predeceased by his nephews David Scott Conroy and Michael Vaughan.

He is survived by Judy Reid (née King), his wife and heart’s companion of more than 55 years, whom he met while attending high school in Golden, BC. He also leaves behind his sons, Russell (Shauna) and Christopher (Lindsay); his cherished grandchildren Eric, Brooklyn, and Liam; his siblings Carol Howie of Kamloops, Judy Vaughan of Cranbrook, Doug Reid of Nanaimo, Terry Reid, Shelley Reid, and Bev Reid of Vancouver; as well as many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and colleagues.

Because of his father’s work, Michael and his siblings moved frequently throughout British Columbia during their childhood. As young person Michael picked blueberries, worked in the Golden Sawmill, drove tow trucks for his father and in Vancouver. After earning his Bachelor of Education degree from UBC in 1974, Michael continued that journey across the province, and embraced living and working over the next 12 years in Chetwynd, Williams Lake, Terrace, Nakusp, and Port McNeill.

Along the way, he coached boys and girls basketball, completed a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Victoria, served on district negotiation contract and provincial accreditation teams, and represented the Principals Association. Michael settled in Qualicum Beach in 1986, where he served as principal at Kwalikum Secondary School (15 years) and Ballenas Secondary School (3 years), as well as District Principal of International Education (3 years).

Even after retiring from administration, he continued consulting for School District 69 for another seven years. At the age of 69, after a 45-year career, Michael finally stepped away from education. Michael believed wholeheartedly in young people and in the value of education. When asked over the years how he managed working with teenagers for so long, he would affectionately respond with a smile “Kids are kids.” Michael embraced life with enthusiasm and humour.

He was a Qualicum Beach Rotary member from 1986-2002, serving as president for two terms. He curled for more than 50 years and golfed for over 40. He was a diehard Vancouver Canucks and San Francisco Giants fan. He loved discussing politics and economics and delighted in taking the contrarian side to spark lively conversation.

He particularly enjoyed vacationing with his family in Scottsdale Arizona for over 40 years. Michael also loved being on the move, whether cycling or jogging. While out on his bike, he was always looking for one more corner to ride around, or one more telephone pole or street sign to jog to. Michael was fond of his hats and trips to DQ.

Michael and Judy shared a love of travel and adventure, exploring many countries together and embracing opportunities to learn about different cultures and perspectives. Above all else, Michael was devoted to his family. He was immensely proud of his sons and adored his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Poppa.” Through every season of life, through thick and thin, he deeply loved Judy, his lifelong mate and best friend.

The family would also like to express their gratitude for the amazing and compassionate care Michael received from his many medical specialists over the years. Michael will be remembered for his kindness, warmth, laughter, and unmistakable smile all while wearing something orange, bright socks, and shorts.

His service will held on Saturday, September 19th at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre (2:00pm) – all are welcome to join the family.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St. Paul’s Sinus Centre.
