After a brief stay at Trillium Lodge Hospice, on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 Peter David Taylor of Qualicum Beach, BC departed peacefully from this life. Peter was born on July 7, 1927 on Cheapside St. in London Ontario.
Loving and devoted husband of the late Sandra Elizabeth Taylor. Much loved youngest son of James and Ann Taylor originally from Norwich Norfolk, UK.
Cherished Dad of two daughters, Karen and Catherine. Beloved Papa of Grandson Taylor and Granddaughter Emily. Forever protected and adored by Maizie ,Luna and childhood Fox Terrier, Mickey.
Respected brother and brother in law of dearly departed Jack (Rita) June (Jack) and Paul (Anna).
Favourite Uncle to many nieces and nephews, Great and Great-great nieces and nephews. Special Uncle Pete to the 'London Gang' Mary Ann, Jacquie, Debbie, Gary and dearly departed Chris. Much loved Uncle Pete to Sue, his and Sandra's flower girl, and Mary Jane, a fellow camper and recycler. Highly regarded Uncle Pete to his wife's nieces, Elizabeth, Laurie and Diana. Dearly loved God Father to Sharon Durrell Wharton and 'Uncle' Pete to the Durrell gang.
Peter enjoyed and so appreciated visits from family from Ontario; Mary Ann, John and son Kevin, Laurie, Rich and son Connor, Elizabeth, Guy and daughter Brittany, Cathie and Ron and Sharon. Most recently, the special visit in September 2025 from Great Nephew Andrew and Caleigh Taylor introducing their children, Oakleigh and Andrew to their Great-great Uncle Pete, Paul's brother. Caleigh's sons Keegan and Kowan also made the trip to meet their honourary uncle.
'Peter The Great' loved his caring neighbours and appreciated their gifts of home made chicken soup, fresh baked bread, nut loaves and cookies. He was a neighbour who brought warmth to the neighbourhood.
Peter worked in the automotive trade for Central Chev-Olds London, Ontario. Dad enjoyed working on the automobiles of the 1960's where he was able to use his personal expertise and manual tools to work on the cars. With mom's encouragement he began a second career in the early 1970's caring for many school communities in the London District Catholic School Board. The teachers and students enjoyed teaching and learning in the very clean and organized schools that dad was in charge of. He retired at the age of 60.
His life revolved around his first love, Sandra, his wife of 72 years and his family. Dad maintained a hopeful outlook when after navigating the immense loss of mom he made the courageous decision to continue living his life with purpose and resilience.
Peter was a natural born storyteller possessing an excellent memory to detail and recounted many humorous stories of his life's adventures. He could bring to life his experiences as boy and young man growing up in the 1930's and 40's, his early work years as a mechanic or escapades while camping with the Durrells at Fanshawe Park or their shared Florida trips. Often, Peter the storyteller, would be laughing so hard while recounting a story, tears would be running down his cheeks and ours.
Peter and Sandra were outdoor enthusiasts, swimming and picnicking at the Great Lakes, skiing, hiking, cycling and camping across Canada and USA.
He enjoyed puttering at home, winemaking, gardening, BBQing, baking, and was a repairman extraordinaire. Peter loved anything to do with nature, nature shows, nature books and was entertained for countless hours by the birds, squirrels, rabbits and deer in his front yard and the assortment of aircraft that flew over the house from the community airport.
Thank you to the volunteer KIT Callers whose phone calls were a welcome part of dad's morning routine.
A heartfelt thank you to the Nurses and the Island Health Community Health Workers who were patient and positive in their care of dad.
Thank you to Dr. Hunter and the nurses at Trillium Lodge Hospice for their compassionate care of dad.
A private gathering will be held at Pall Mall, Thorncrest and Springbank Park.
