Obituary

Reginald Hinchey Obituary Craig Hinchey was born on November 22, 1951, in Kingston, Ontario, and passed away in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, on April 19, 2025. Growing up, Craig loved playing never-ending games of Risk and cutthroat Monopoly, sailing at the yacht club, and skiing. His creativity and sense of humor were apparent in his work for Superfrog, the high school newspaper of Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute. Craig earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Toronto. In 1981, he was awarded the University of Torontos Faculty of Social Work Alumni Association Sophie Byrd Award. Craigs career in social work was guided by his passionate belief in the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. He worked with child protection services in Kingston, with inmates of the Kingston Penitentiary, in several Toronto group homes, and with First Nations communities in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. Craig was also a popular teacher of social work practices at Seneca College in Toronto and a sessional lecturer at the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University in Halifax. His teaching featured the innovative use of SimCity as a classroom tool to teach the basic tenets of social policy. In 1987, Craig met Colleen, and so began a love affair that lasted over 30 years. In 1989, they were married in Victoria, BC. For the first five years of their marriage, the couple lived in different cities due to their professional commitments, but they would come together on weekends in the house they owned in Sackville, New Brunswick. In 1995, their daughter Kate was born, and they moved to Halifax. Craig embraced fatherhood enthusiastically and was absolutely smitten with his daughter. During her first year, he was the stay-at-home parent and referred to that period as the happiest of his life. Throughout her childhood, he reveled in creating alternate lyrics to songs, making up outlandish stories, and playing board gamescheating outrageously whenever possible. After Kates birth, Craig worked as a policy analyst in the Nova Scotia Community Services Department. During this time, he was appointed for two terms to the Disabled Persons Commission of Nova Scotia, a position in which he took particular pride. Upon retiring in 2017, the family moved to Qualicum Beach. Craig felt fully at home on the West Coast, embracing the ocean and mountains and relishing the fact that spring started in February. In his final years, he enjoyed afternoons in his garden, spending time with his family, and walking their aging dog. Craig will be remembered as a kind man, a generous friend, a supportive colleague, and a devoted husband and father. He had an agile, curious mind and an impish sense of humor that shone through the twinkle in his eyes. Despite ongoing health challenges, he maintained his warmth and gentle good humor to the end. Throughout his personal and professional life, Craig triedthrough words and by exampleto make the world a better and more caring place. He is survived by his brother, Brian (Jan) of Kingston; his wife of 36 years, Colleen Day; and his daughter, Kate Hinchey-Day. ...then laugh, leaning back in my arms for lifes not a paragraph And death, I think, is no parenthesis.
