Robert Burkosky - Lovingly Remembered
It is with immense sadness and love that we announce the passing of our father, Robert Edward Burkosky, 96, of Qualicum Beach, BC. Robert passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025.
Bob was pre-deceased by his wife, Colleen Joy, and leaves behind his 4 children, Bob (Peggy), Rod (Fran), Cathy, and Carol (Al), as well as his 4 grandchildren, Evan, Kyla, Cal, and Rylan.
Born on May 7, 1929, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Frank and Hazel Burkosky, Bob was the youngest of 4 brothers. He spent his boyhood as a typical prairie kid, swimming in the North Saskatchewan River in the summer and playing hockey on frozen ponds in the winter.
He became interested in mechanics at his father's service station during his teens. As a young man, he combined his love of mechanics with his fascination for aviation and began an apprenticeship with Saskatchewan Government Airways in Prince Albert.
Early in his career, he accepted a job with McMurray Air Services and moved his young family north to Uranium City.
A move to Vancouver followed, and a lifetime career in various aspects of aviation with the federal government ensued. Eventually, Bob was instrumental in establishing the Aviation Regulation District Office in Kelowna and became the District Airworthiness Superintendent.
During his lifetime of interest in aircraft and flying, Bob acquired both his private and commercial licenses. He rebuilt, owned, and flew two vintage aircraft. He also loved vintage cars and completely restored a 1938 Chrysler Imperial, which he once drove with his wife, Colleen, and two daughters, all the way from Kelowna to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
Bob will be remembered for his love for his family, always providing opportunities for family gatherings and fun, which often included music. He loved to play the piano and accordion and to sing and joke around and make people laugh. Wonderful times were had at the family cottage on Shuswap Lake as well.
He and Colleen enjoyed many wonderful trips together in their motorhome during retirement, traveling to the prairies and down to Arizona.
Bob was well-liked and known for his ambition, quick wit, and mischievous nature.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 27, 2025, at 2 PM, at 464 Quatsino Road, Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 1B5.
