Obituary

Ronald Ansell Obituary Ron was born May 6, 1934, in the village of North Regina, the third child of Bill and Jean Ansell. He was predeceased by his parents, his partner Erin Campbell, and his sisters Audrey Engstrom, and Vera Simpson. He is survived by his sister Maureen Plul, his children Max (Brenda), Dawn (Jim), Pat (Connie) and Bill (Leslie), his stepchildren Doug (Raylene) and Kerry (Keith) and numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rons childhood was split between time on the rink and the ball diamond with his friends interrupted briefly by meals, school, time listening to the radio, and church on Sunday. The back porch had a perpetual crokinole game and a walk through the porch mandated a play. His advice years later to his great-grandchildren was to make sure they used their middle finger for the best shots. Ron worked at various jobs, settling in Swift Current where, on February 28, 1953, he married Maxine Engler. He worked at the Federal Research and Development Centre in Swift Current until 1963. He also harvested with local farmers every fall. The family moved to Regina in 1963 and he managed the greenhouse and grounds at the RCMP Training Depot in Regina from 1963 to 1980. Ron was an exceptional hockey player. He played and coached in the Wild Goose Hockey League and played for the Regina Capitals, the RCMP depot team and an Old Timers league. He coached his sons in the Regina Pat minor hockey organization, played a role in player development for the Regina Pats and eventually scouted for the Los Angeles Kings. He had an impact on numerous young players, many of which went on to professional careers. In 1980, Ron had an opportunity to relocate to and then retire on Vancouver Island. He worked at the Centre for Plant Health in Sidney from 1980 until his retirement in 1995. Before he left Regina, he exchanged his hockey stick for a set of golf clubs. Golf became his passion in retirement, and he travelled on numerous golfing trips in western Canada and the US. Ron and Maxine went their separate ways in 1988. Ron was the strata manager at Sailview, in Sidney, for about ten years. Ron and Erin moved to Qualicum Beach shortly after a fire destroyed their home in Sailview, and then to French Creek. He claimed that there were more golf courses in that district than anywhere else on Vancouver Island. They enjoyed many trips including to Arizona, Dubai and Mexico. Ron won his last golf tournament in Qualicum Beach in July of 2017. In August, he was admitted to Arrowsmith Lodge, and he spent his last five years there. Ron is remembered as a respectful and gentle man, who loved to laugh. He was a great hockey player and golfer, a great storyteller and dancer and a very hard worker. His yards were beautifully landscaped and there were always flowers in the house. He was a great friend of his children and grandchildren. His was a well-lived and well-loved life and he will be missed by many family members and friends. Rest in peace Ron. You have earned your rest.
