OBITUARY
DRYHURST, Wilfred Cameron
February 24, 1956 April 23, 2025
With heavy hearts, the family of Wilfred Cameron (Cam) Dryhurst announce his recent passing, quietly at his home on Quadra Island, British Columbia. Cam was born in Vancouver, BC, on February 24, 1956, and died on April 23, 2025. He was sixty-nine years of age.
Predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Sheila, Cam is survived by his two loving sisters, Barbara Dryhurst and Sharon (Patrick) Ives; two nieces, Vanessa (Stefano) Mastromonaco and Jennifer (Marc) Ives-Fournet; one great-niece, Adelina; three great-nephews, Quinn, Alec, and Edmond; and numerous cousins.
As a young man, Cam learned the skills of a British car mechanic through apprenticeship and employment with Terry's British Cars Ltd. in Vancouver. He subsequently studied at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby before being accepted at British Columbia Institute of Technology to train as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. He was then employed by Vancouver Island Helicopters in Sidney, where he was responsible for maintenance, overhaul, and certification of the companys fleet of aircraft. Helicopters had fascinated Cam since childhood.
Next came a six-year term with ConAir Aviation as the Base Engineer at Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, where he maintained aircraft, supervised, and trained apprentice aircraft engineers at facilities throughout Canada, the USA, Mexico, and South America.
Cam pursued further career training by attending Vancouver Community College, graduating in 1996 with a Provincial Instructor Diploma. This achievement enabled him to teach aeronautics students and contribute extensively to course development and revision. He taught at British Columbia Institute of Technology until his retirement in 2016.
Cam remained meticulous, sensitive, generous, and dedicated throughout his working life. Outside of work, he greatly enjoyed meeting and helping others, spending time in nature, and observing the trees, mountains, tides, and rhythms of the sea. His interests included fishing, boating, camping, scuba diving, golfing, car and boat shows, droll humour like that of Monty Python, and music. He was also an amazing writer.
Intelligent, conscientious, and caring, Cam will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. May he rest in peace.
