William 'Bill' Martin Obituary William (Bill) Donaldson Martin October 5, 1934 November 13, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, William "Bill" Donaldson Martin, on November 13, 2024, in Parksville, BC, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Bill was born on October 5, 1934, in Motherwell, Scotland, and grew up in New Stevenston. He fondly remembered his years at Dalziel High School, where his love of learning and storytelling began. He graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1958 with degrees in Medicine and Surgery. His medical career began as a House Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, followed by a post at Law Hospital near Carluke. In 1959, Bill joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as a Flight Lieutenant and Medical Officer, fulfilling his British National Service obligation. This experience, which included providing medical care to service members and their families, gave him valuable skills he carried throughout his career. While stationed in Ontario, he returned to Scotland in 1960 to marry Agnes (Nan) Wallace, a nurse he had met at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Together, they began their life in married quarters at Camp Borden, Ontario. After completing his RCAF service, Bill and Nan returned to Scotland in 1962, where Bill held several medical positions, including anesthetics at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Dundee Royal Infirmary. During this time, their family grew with their children Alan, Anne, and Pauline. In 1968, the family emigrated to Canada, settling first in Trail, BC, where Bill worked at the CS Williams Clinic. In 1971, they moved to Delta, BC, where Bill became a Staff Anesthetist at Surrey Memorial Hospital. He worked there until his retirement in 2002, except for a brief period at Royal Columbian Hospital. After retiring, Bill and his second wife, Margaret Armstrong, whom he married in 1995, embraced a life of travel and adventure. Bill took on locum roles in Australia, New Zealand, and the Cayman Islands, and he and Margaret enjoyed many holidays with her family. They eventually retired to Qualicum Beach and Parksville, where they were blessed with wonderful neighbors and a close-knit community. Bill is lovingly remembered by his children Alan Martin, Anne Shaw (Allan), and Pauline Martin (Pierre Remund); his grandchildren Sarah Thom, Cameron Shaw, Allison Shaw, and Callum Thom; and his extended family of nieces, nephews, and their families across Canada, England, and Scotland. He was predeceased by his second wife, Margaret; his parents, Helen and John Martin; siblings John Martin and Margaret Sullivan; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Martin; niece, Margaret-Anne Churchward; and nephew, Gordon Martin. The family is deeply grateful to Ohana Care and the Trillium Hospice team in Parksville for their compassionate care, as well as to Eileen and Allan Wilson for their loving support during Dads final weeks. Eileens "Gran Martin" pancakes brought him great joy. Dad will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to medicine, his passion for storytelling and poetry, and his deep love for family. He enriched the lives of all who knew him and will be dearly missed. A celebration of Bills life will be held on March 29, 2025, beginning with the interment of his ashes at Qualicum Beach Cemetery at 1 pm, followed by a reception at the Qualicum Beach Inn.
