Winston Cyril
Bishop
December 22, 1939 – August 3, 2025
Cyril's life of love, laughter, and service to his God, family, church (The Salvation Army), and community ended with his Promotion to Glory on August 3, 2025.
Born on December 22, 1939, in Dildo, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Cyril attended Memorial University of Newfoundland after high school and began a career in teaching. He later became a social worker with the Newfoundland government, retiring from that role on January 1, 1995.
His retirement years—right up until the last month of his life—were filled with devoted service to the Salvation Army, first in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, and later in Parksville, British Columbia. Most recently, he served as a greeter at the soup kitchen, a task he loved deeply.
Cyril was an honorable gentleman, faithful to his God, devoted to his family and friends, and kind to everyone he met. When told in April that he had cancer and a life expectancy of only a few months, his response was, "I am 85 years old. I have had a wonderful life, and if God wants to take me home now, that's okay."
He is predeceased by his mother, Ruby Nash; his family members Mark and Aileen Newhook, Eric and Margaret Newhook, and their son Gerald Newhook; brothers Kevin and Wayne Nash; brother-in-law Terry Barron; parents-in-law James and Doris Penney; and grandson Brian Bishop.
Giving thanks to God for Cyril and his love for us all, and celebrating a life well lived, are his wife of 64 years, Marina (Penney); their sons Sheldon (Sharon) and Michael (Tanya); grandchildren Krystopher Bishop (with his mother Lisa MacDonald), Craig Hannon, Mark Gardner, Christopher Hannon, Richard Bishop, Alley Lovell, Weston Lovell, and Easton Lovell (with their mother Nicole Parsons); and Cyril's pride and joy, his first great-grandchild, Ryan Christopher Hannon.
Also cherishing his memory are his sister Carol Barron; brother Adrian Nash (Regina); sisters-in-law Dorothy Nash, Grace Wicks (Lorne), and Carol Bessell (John); brother-in-law Byron Penney (Gwen); along with Debbie, Elizabeth, Cheryl, Mark, Cindy, Krista, Selby, Don and Marie; lifelong friend Lillian Mayo; and all other extended family and friends.
"Servant of God, well done!
Rest from thy loved employ;
The battle fought, the victory won,
Enter thy master's joy."
— Isaiah 49:16
A celebration of Cyril's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on August 10 at Mt. Arrowsmith Salvation Army, 187 Alberni Highway, Parksville, British Columbia.
