April 18, 1938 ~ February 26, 2022 (age 83)

Obituary

John Jonker passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord and Saviour on February 26, 2022. He was a loving and caring husband of almost 62 years, father of 4, grandfather of 13, and great grandfather of 12. His sense of humour, his work ethic and his strong Christian faith made him a great role model for his family. He was active for his entire lifetime in church as a member, choir member, elder, and teacher. He knew the great love, mercy, and grace of God. John was born in Garnwerd, Netherlands on April 18, 1938. He immigrated to Calgary with his family at 16 years of age. He met Martha at a church youth camp in 1958 where they were both counsellors. They were married on May 13,1960 in Calgary, where their four children were born. They moved to Victoria in 1966 and raised their children there. In 1986, they moved back to Alberta, first to Redcliff and subsequently to Red Deer. In 2014, they relocated to Qualicum Beach for their retirement years. The second world war had a big impact on his life as a small child. Even though he was very young, he had vivid memories of the occupation of Holland and of his family’s role in hiding Jews, evacuees, and “persons in hiding” on their family farm during this time. John completed his schooling in the Netherlands and after immigrating to Canada completed an Electronics Technician program at SAIT (Alberta). In Calgary John worked in home construction and in a cabinetry shop. After 1963, he worked as an Electronics Technician for 23 years in Calgary and Victoria, eventually operating his own business “Metro Electronics” in downtown Victoria. Upon returning to Alberta, he worked for 26 years in home building centers. He was known for his strong work ethic, expertise and attention to detail, and his dedication to good customer service. John always had a great love for singing hymns and spiritual songs. He was an avid lifetime vegetable and dahlia gardener, and enjoyed many hobbies. John passed away peacefully at home with his arm around his wife and his daughters nearby. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Martha, and his children Patricia (Sid) Lodewyk of Comox, Ralph Jonker (Cindy Ekdahl) of Edmonton, Brenda (Henry) Vanderschaaf of Duncan, and Albert (Kathey) Jonker of Duncan; as well as by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers Albert (Anne) Jonker and Okko (Audrey) Jonker of Taber, AB, and his sister Sybrich (Cecil) of Niagara Falls, ON. John is predeceased by his parents (Roelf and Egbertha), his sister (Sijbrich), and his granddaughter Elsa.
